Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Doubles Down on Generative AI With Nova Premier Debut; Shares Rise

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) shares rose about 4% in pre-market trading on Thursday after the company introduced its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date, Nova Premier, at the AWS re:Invent conference. The launch marks a significant move by the e-commerce and cloud computing giant as it intensifies efforts to compete in the fast-growing generative AI space.

Available through Amazon Web Services (AWS), Nova Premier is touted as an improvement over its predecessor, Nova, offering higher accuracy and efficiency at a lower operational cost. The company claims the model excels in tasks requiring complex reasoning, multistep planning, and precise execution across multiple tools and data sources.

According to Amazon, Nova Premier outperforms competitors on about half of industry benchmarks and is comparable to top non-reasoning models. China’s DeepSeek V3 currently leads in that category.

The launch comes amid a highly competitive AI race, with Microsoft-backed (NASDAQ: MSFT) OpenAI recently releasing its GPT-4o model and Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) rolling out updates to its Gemini model this month.

In a separate development, Amazon revealed plans on Wednesday to invest more than $4 billion to expand its rural delivery network across the United States. The company aims to complete the expansion by the end of 2026, increasing the number of delivery stations to over 200 and creating 100,000 new jobs. The move is part of Amazon’s strategy to provide faster deliveries and boost demand among customers in small towns and rural areas.

Amazon is expected to report its quarterly earnings after the market closes on Thursday.

As of the latest update, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) shares are up 3.84%, trading at $191.50.
