IONQ (NYSE: IONQ) stock rose by over 2% in pre-market trading on Tuesday, following the announcement of an expanded collaboration with a prominent Japanese research division.
The U.S.-based quantum computing firm revealed it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI Technology (G-QuAT), a division of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). The partnership aims to accelerate quantum computing advancements in Japan.
G-QuAT focuses on developing advanced hybrid-quantum computing technologies integrated with artificial intelligence and aims to accelerate quantum research and development, expand real-world applications, and build a global quantum business ecosystem.
The MoU outlines the collaboration between G-QuAT and IonQ, enabling G-QuAT to access IonQ Forte-class quantum computers via the IonQ Cloud. The partnership aims to support joint research, development, and innovation. This agreement reflects the shared vision of both companies to promote the growth and adoption of quantum technologies in Japan’s research and technology sectors.
Niccolo de Masi, President and CEO of IonQ, expressed optimism about the partnership, emphasizing that the collaboration with G-QuAT aims to uncover new quantum computing applications that could revolutionize multiple industries. Likewise, Mashiro Horibe, Deputy Director of G-QuAT, underscored the importance of the alliance in building a global quantum ecosystem and making quantum computing more accessible to a broader audience.
This MoU represents the latest development in IonQ’s partnership with AIST, which aims to provide access to its Forte-class quantum computers to support the advancement of quantum technologies in Japan. McKinsey reports that Japan is making significant strides toward its quantum computing objectives, with over $1.8 billion in public funding already announced and multiple government-backed research labs commissioned as of 2024.
The move comes after IONQ (NYSE: IONQ) launched its first quantum computer in Europe in partnership with QuantumBasel.
